GIGOGRAPHY
The Wednesdays have been together for a few years now. Here are our highlights of a few of our past gigs....
Firsdown Music Fayre - Firsdown - July 2008
"We all have to start somewhere. This was our first gig as THE WEDNESDAYS in front of an audience not made up of family and friends. We played 11 songs (all we had at the time) and were first on the bill on an eight band lineup on an outside stage. We came out and started playing to a practically empty field - When we left the stage 40 minutes later, we were playing to over 200 appreciative people, many of whom were dancing at the front"
The Wig and Quill - Salisbury - March 2009
"The Wednesday's first "full set", headlining gig - 35 songs in our set. What an exciting and sweaty night. We played for over two hours and came away with a full pub chanting for more. We gave the crowd four encores that night. Does it get much more exciting...?"
The Three Crowns - Alderbury - April 2009
The Wednesdays playing out of town to a brand new audience. We started out squeezing into a small corner of the pub (no mean feat with five us us, equipment, the PA and lights) and not knowing what to expect. A concentrated first half was followed by a storming second half to the set. This was where we began to call the last 10 songs "The Build". Another night with a few encores and the audience left wanting more.
The Three Crowns - Alderbury - June 2009
After playing in April we were immediately booked again for June. This time we took "The Wednesdays' crowd". What a gig! We played for over two hours and had to play Mamma Mia twice in the encore.
Firsdown Music Fayre - Firsdown - June 2009
Going back to where it began a year ago. We vowed to play a brand new set - nothing that had been played the year before (except Mamma Mia as it is a favourite of Pete's daughter). We played this time 6th on the bill, just below the headliners. Sun was shining and we were feeling good.
Wedding - Great Wishford - August 2009
A couple getting married had booked us in the interval after seeing us at The Three Crowns in Alderbury. This was our first "wedding gig". Weddings are hard but our set went down a storm. At this gig we learnt a song for the happy couples' first dance - no pressure then. People were dancing all night long. We were backed by Visually Sound Disco and this really was a test for us. Now we can do anything....
Wedding - Burcombe - October 2009
This gig we were booked to play for 2 hours. The speeches over-ran and we ended up playing for only an hour. We had to adjust the set according to who was dancing and really felt the pressure. At the end of the night, guests were on stage with us singing Chesney Hawkes and shouting all the "woohoos" in song 2 (which seemed to go on for hours). Good fun for all.
The Wig and Quill - Salisbury - October 2009 (Halloween)
So Westy and Vinnie dressed up as a zombie and Freddy Krueger. Let's just say the make up started running before the gig got started. This WAS the best gig so far. WOW! The pub was packed and the people were ready to enjoy themselves. We played for almost three hours this time and still we were made to feel bad when we turned the amps off. Still, we walked out of this gig being booked to play the following halloween and two other "Wig Gigs". Wahey (as our bass player says)!
The Three Crowns - Alderbury - November 2009
A rainy night in a country pub. Oh well, they cannot all be good gigs. We played our hearts out but it felt like "MTV Unplugged". We played to a half full pub but managed at the end to coax everyone in the pub to dance to "The Build".
The Volunteer - Wantage (Oxfordshire) - December 2009.
Technical hitches, long journeys and an audience that did not know what to expect. All of this and we absolutely knocked it out of the park! A good gig in a strange venue. Good friends were made that night and The Wednesdays took the first step on our UK tour (well, Oxfordshire).
The Wig and Quill - Salisbury - March 2010
First gig of the year. We pulled out six new songs for this one and we think all of them are keepers. Now the questions is, what to drop? Any ideas (rhetorical question...)? So this one was back at our "home ground". Good to start the year in familiar surroundings but we want to get out a bit wider this year. The gig was superb with no hiccups from anyone. Good to be back.
Trade Aid Rock n Roll Barn Dance - Stuckton - May 2010.
Possibly the most beautiful venue we have ever played at. In fact, this was a stunning venue, with a great audience who danced from the first song to the last one (and beyond, we played five blistering songs as the encore and still the crowd wanted us to carry on). We received a glowing endorsement by being asked to play on three other dates for various people in the crowd.
Brecon Beacon - Private Party - Brecon - May 2010.
The furthest away we have played so far. This was a gig for a friend of our drummer. We turned up and played in absolutely cavernous cow barn on a farm. The cows had been put in a field but we still had the odd reminder to step in. We played for over two and a half hours to huge crowd of about 350 people. It took some time to get the crowd away from the bar but once we got into the second half of the set, we had new dancers on every song. It is always a good gig if the crowd are asking for more at the end.
The Volunteer - Wantage (Oxfordshire) - June 2010.
Well, the rain gods did not want us to play this gig. We played to a good audience who stuck with us under gazebos until the end but our equipement all needed a wipe down in the morning. This could have been a gig that ended in our spectacular electrocution. Memorable as we almost never made it through this one.
Private Party - Salisbury Hospital - July 2010.
This one was for a birthday party of someone special to the band. It started with Damian's now legendary "Swing Section" acting as our warm up act, along with a man dressed in a red leather dress singing Britney (being in this band is ALWAYS an experience and not always a good one). I htink this gig was another turning point for the band taking a step up. This was literally a perfect gig.
Private BBQ Party - Firsdown Village - July 2010.
Starting with Damian's "Swing Section" the band got off to a good start. We played to an eclectic audience that were willing and keen to dance all night long. We played in a great venue until it was really dark. This was one of those really cool summer nights.
Wig and Quill - Salisbury - 31st July.
The second of three booked gigs at the Wig and Quill. This pub is our spiritual home. So many good times have been had at this pub! This gig was just the best the band have played so far. I do not think any band would have had the whole pub dancing as much as The Wednesdays did on this night. This gig is memorable as it was the first gig where we knew we would need a big encore so we stuck some absolutely classic Wednesdays numbers in for this. We still played an impromptu encore after these songs. We could have played for another hour and still we would have "left 'em wanting more". A classic gig by The Wednesdays.
